Asphalt
shingles are a common, comparatively inexpensive roofing material. Yet these shingles tend to have shorter lifetimes,
resulting in more frequent replacement, along with disposal of the used shingles. Other roofing material options, such as metal, may
have higher initial cost, but can offer benefits such as longer life, recyclability at the
end of their useful life, increased potential for rooftop
water catchment for irrigation, and greater fire resistance. Roofing color also can play a role in resource and
energy efficiency. Studies have shown that
lighter roofing colors reflect heat especially important in hot climates as a means
of reducing the cooling loadand lengthen the life of roofing assemblies by
preventing overheating.
Recommendations:
§ Choose roofing materials with recycled content and recyclability.
§
Select light-colored roofing
materials for hot climates.
§ Install durable roofing materials with a performance warranty.
§ Orient rooflines to accommodate
solar panels.
§
Select roof framing that allows insulation installation, such as raised heel
or energy truss.
