Construction Patterns and Recommendations

16. Installation Detailing to ensure performance

Even the most resource- and energy-efficient materials and systems can’t make a house sustainable unless they are properly installed and operated.  Careful attention to detail during installation ensures that systems perform as intended, and that the house performs as a holistic system. Detailing is important to ensure that the design team’s intent is carried out, and that materials and systems can perform to their full capacity. Integrating the builder into the design team can help foster understanding of the specific installation procedures and site practices needed to make a building more sustainable.

Recommendations:

§        Schedule regular site visits/inspections to ensure that framing plan and specifications are being applied.

§        Seal all wall penetrations, joints and ducts to prevent air infiltration.

§         Install insulation to fill cavities without compaction.

§         Commission systems and equipment to ensure proper performance.
