Pre-Design
Patterns and Recommendations
2. Funding
Using sustainable design features as assets
In
some cases, the environmental features of a home may qualify it for funding sources or
financing programs that would not otherwise be available. Rather than thinking of environmental features as a potential added cost for a
home, they can be viewed as a benefit that makes a funding opportunity
accessible. Some examples are
transportation-efficient mortgages, energy-efficient mortgages, density bonuses,
redevelopment programs, and utility rebate programs for energy-efficient homes or
appliances.
Recommendations:
§ Check
local development agencies to identify incentive programs that apply to certain sites.
§ Check
with local utilities and state energy offices to identify programs that provide incentives
or rebates for energy-efficient features in new homes.
§ Investigate
mortgage programs that recognize the lower operating costs of energy-efficient and
transportation-efficient homes.
