Outfitting –
Purchasing efficient appliances and fixtures
Some appliances may be selected by the occupant, while others are
installed in advance by the builder. In
either case, major home appliances represent a significant portion of the yearly energy
consumption of each home. Selecting
energy-efficient and water-efficient appliances and fixtures can play an important role in
reducing consumption and the operating costs borne by the occupant. As one example, in a recent study efficient
clothes washers saved users 50 percent on energy and 44 percent on water, as well as 24
percent on detergent.
Recommendations:
§
Install
compact fluorescent lighting.
§
Choose
the most energy- efficient major appliances allowed by budget.
§
Install water-conserving fixtures.
§
Select water-efficient dishwashers and clothes washers.
